Are you an experienced Hairdresser or Barber without formal qualifications? South Australia’s Occupational Recognition Service is your opportunity to gain certification for your skills and expertise without the need for traditional training.

What is the Occupational Recognition Service?

This innovative program introduced by the Government of South Australia, SA Skills Commission, in consultation with the South Australian Hair and Beauty Association (SAHBA), provides a streamlined pathway to formal trade recognition. It helps skilled professionals showcase their capabilities and gain certification. This is not a qualification course, but a recognition pathway designed to validate your hands-on experience.

How it works

You must provide evidence of your skills as a hairdresser or barber & have 42 months of industry experience.

By demonstrating through an interview with a panel of industry experts and performing a skills assessment in hairdressing or barbering, tailored and delivered through an SAHBA-approved Registered Training Provider, you will:

  • Demonstrate your skills and knowledge

  • Identify any additional training needed to support your development

  • Work toward achieving a Trade Recognition Certificate

Who is this pathway for?

This pathway is ideal for:

  • Experienced Barbers & Hairdressers with 42 months experience -Those seeking formal recognition to work as a barber or hairdresser in South Australia to comply with the Hairdressers Act 1988.

To legally work as a barber or hairdresser in SA, you must be qualified or currently doing an apprenticeship.

If you’re working without a qualification or not in a registered apprenticeship, you are breaking the law.

What is the process?

  1. Submit your application and assessment fee online using the button below

  2. Your application will be lodged through the South Australian Skills Commission and referred to SAHBA

  3. SAHBA will contact you to arrange an interview

  4. Your practical skills will be assessed in person by qualified assessors

  5. Your experience will be reviewed against industry standards and any gap training will be identified

  6. You will receive your Occupational Recognition determination
